Symbolic bell

When [symbolic] bells are divided: དྲིལ་བུ་ལ་དབྱེ་ན།

1. Vajrasattva bell རྡོོ་རྗེ་སེམས་དཔའི་དྲིལ་བུ།
   It is encircled by a garland of vajras in between two garlands at the rim; it has either nine or five prongs ཁའི་ཕྲེང་བ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་བར་དུ་རྡོོ་རྗེ་ཕྲེང་བས་བསྐོར་ཞིང་། རྩེ་མོོ་དགུ་པ་དང་། ལྔ་པ་གཉིས་ཡོོད།
2. Hero bell དཔའ་བོོའི་དྲིལ་བུ།
   Lacks the chains and half-chains དྲ་བ་དྲ་ཕྱེད་ཀྱི་རྒྱན་མེད་པའོོ།
3. Tathagata bell དེ་བཞིན་གཤེགས་པའི་དྲིལ་བུ་རྣམས་སུ་ཡོོད།
   1. Five-pronged, with the face of Vairocana, and encircled by wheels instead of the vajra garland
      དེ་བཞིན་གཤེགས་པའི་དྲིལ་བུ་ནི། རྩེ་ལྔ་པ་ཡིན་ལ་རྣམ་སྣང་གི་ཞལ་ཅན། རྡོོ་རྗེ་ཕྲེང་བའི་ཚབ་ཏུ་འཁོར་ལོོས་བསྐོར་བ་དང་།
   2. Five-pronged, with the face of Ratnasambhava, and encircled by jewels
      དེ་བཞིན་དུ་རྩེ་ལྔ་པ་ཡིན་ལ་རིན་འབྱུང་གི་ཞལ་ཅན་ལ་རིན་པོོ་ཆེ།
   3. Five-pronged, with the face of Amitābha, and encircled by lotuses
      འོོད་དཔག་མེད་ཀྱི་ཞལ་ཅན་ལ་པངྨ།
   4. Five-pronged, with the face of Amoghasiddhi, and encircled by swords
      དོོན་གྲུབ་ཀྱི་ཞལ་ཅན་ལ་རལ་གྲིས་བསྐོར་བའི་དྲིལ་བུ་བཞི་ཡོོད།

There is also a convention of referring to the dorje and bell as: ཡང་རྡོོར་དྲིལ་ལ།

1. Commitment dorje and bell དམ་ཚིག་གི་རྡོོར་དྲིལ་དང་།
   Five-pronged རྩེ་ལྔ་པ་དང་།
2. Exalted wisdom dorje and bell ཡེ་ཤེས་ཀྱི་རྡོོར་དྲིལ་གཉིས་སུ་ཐ་སྙད་བྱེད་པའང་ཡོོད།
   Nine-pronged རྩེ་དགུ་པར་བཤད་དོོ།

Symbolism:

• The three sections of the bell symbolise the three realms. Since the inside it empty, it symbolises that the three realms are empty of inherent existence.
  དྲིལ་བུ་ཆ་གསུམ་དུ་གནས་པས་ཁམས་གསུམ་མཚོོན། ནང་ཁོང་སྟོོང་དུ་ཡོོད་པས་ཁམས་གསུམ་རང་བཞིན་གྱིས་སྟོོང་པ་མཚོོན་པ་ཡིན།
• The handle of the bell symbolises the resultant exalted wisdom of spontaneous great bliss, the method for realising emptiness.
  དྲིལ་བུའི་དབྱུག་གུས་སྟོོང་ཉིད་རྟོོགས་པའི་ཐབས་འབྲས་དུས་ཀྱི་ལྷན་སྐྱེས་བདེ་བ་ཆེན་པོོའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་མཚོོན།
• Its waist (lit. pot) symbolises indivisible bliss and emptiness
  དེའི་བུམ་པས་བདེ་སྟོོང་དབྱེར་མེད་པ་མཚོོན།
• The face on the bell symbolises the exalted wisdom of indivisible bliss and emptiness that dawns in the aspect of Prajñāpāramitā
  དྲིལ་བུའི་ཞལ་གྱིས་བདེ་སྟོོང་དབྱེར་མེད་ཀྱི་ཡེ་ཤེས་ཤེར་ཕྱིན་མའི་རྣམ་པར་ཤར་བ་མཚོོན།
• The eight letters on the lotus symbolise the four consorts and the four of Vasudhārā and so forth.
  པངྨའི་ཡི་གེ་བརྒྱད་ཀྱིས་ཡུམ་བཞི་དང་ནོོར་རྒྱུན་མ་སོོགས་བཞི་མཚོོན་པའོོ།
• The sound of the bell symbolises that the saṃbhogakāya [endowed with the seven branches of union] continuously turns the wheel of Vajrayana Dharma
  དྲིལ་བུའི་སྒྲས་ལོོངས་སྐུ་དེ་ཉིད་རྡོོ་རྗེ་ཐེག་པའི་ཆོས་འཁོར་རྒྱུན་མི་འཆད་དུ་བསྐོར་བ་མཚོོན་པའོོ།
