The four characteristics
The subject - the four of production/birth, ageing, abiding, impermanence - are the characteristics of compounded phenomena because of being the positors of compounded phenomena; because of being correct signs for proving a pot, for example, is a compounded phenomenon.
The illustration - pot - is characterised as being a compounded phenomenon because it is suitable to be characterised as "being produced, ageing, abiding, and impermanent"; do not connect it with "having those" or "possessing those" because the pervasion is mistaken.
Those four possess functions because:
- Production generates
- Ageing progresses
- Abiding makes them remain
- Impermanence disintegrates
The four do not arise sequentially because they arise simultaneously; because if it is a compounded phenomenon, then it is pervaded by arising together with the four of production and so forth.
