Causing a schism in the Sangha

Definition of a schism in the sangha: That observed as a substantial-existent in the compositional factors aggregate that is a common locus of:

  1. Possessing the nature of mental disharmony between two sects of the sangha; and
  2. Being non-obscured unspecified.

Such a schism is:

Therefore, it is possessed by the sangha of both sides [of the divide].

Definition of the uninterrupted action: That observed as a karmic obscuration that is the common locus of:

  1. Being the misdeed that arises from such a schism in the sangha; and
  2. Being a great lie.

This is possessed by the Gelong Devadatta, for example.

Who divides?

Where is there division? Divisions occur in places other than where our Teacher actually abides. They are not able to divide in the presence of our Teacher because of the Teacher's authority and magnificence.

Who is divided? Childish sangha are divided; Arya sangha cannot be divided because Aryas have directly perceived the truth and have attained faith through knowledge.

What is the measure of a division? They are divided when they tolerate, have faith in, and uphold the path of a teacher other than our Teacher (such as the Gelong Devadatta) and teachings other than those of our Teacher (such as Devadatta's five training advices).

The five training advices are:

  1. No drinking yogurt
  2. No eating meat
  3. No using salt
  4. Wearing non-tailored clothing
  5. Staying in villages and cities

How long does such a schism of the wheel last? It does not remain longer than a day because as soon as it arises the two Supreme Disciples will naturally act to reconcile.

It is referred to as "a schism of the wheel" because from having arisen and until the sangha are reconciled, it hinders the arising of Arya paths in the continuum of the disciples.

This requires a minimum of nine Gelongs to create because it requires a complete sangha (of four) in each side of the divide and to be divided by a ninth Gelong.

A schism of the wheel only exists in Jambudvipa due to the existence of the Buddha; it does not exist in the other continents.

Definition of a schism of activities: That observed as that distinguished by being created by mental discontent with engaging in activities such as Sojong and so forth between two sanghas in the same enclosure.

A schism of activities exists in the three continents (excluding Unpleasant Sound) because the teachings exist there.

A schism of activities is created by eight or more Gelongs, there is no need for a separate instigator.
